Trail Running comes in all different kind of shapes, sizes and races!
Some of the most regular types the club are involved with are listed below:
Non-self Navigation Races
A number of trail races are like standard road races in that they have marshals and signed routes. The obvious difference is that they are off-road!
Our own race The Heath Race is held under a trail racing association license.
Some of the regular trail races that Newmarket Joggers regularly take part in are:
Self Navigation Races
Self navigation include races where you’re given a descriptive route description at the start and follow the instructions to find the correct (and fastest!) route round. Self navigation races also include orienteering races where you will usually have to use a map and compass. Good sources to find these races include:
Last year Newmarket Joggers helped support a descriptive trail race The Fox Inn Trail – watch this space for trail races the club host going forward!
Ultra Running
Ultra running has really exploded in popularity the last few years within the running community and there a number of Newmarket joggers who have completed distances over 26.2 miles. Ultras traditionally followed a known trail such as the West Highland Way but these days there are a number of different types of ultra with point to point, laps or multi day or team events. Races Newmarket Joggers have taken part in recently inlcude:
Although you can find runners’ ultra times on Power of 10, a great resource for ultra results is DUV Ultra Marathon Statistics
Fell Races
“Fell” is just another word for a hill or mountain, and fell running is a type of hill or mountain running. Fell running is an all-terrain sport and often involves routes with no paths: depending on the area you should expect open moorland, rocky grass, bogs, tussocks, heather, boulder fields and some very steep climbs and descents. You will also be required to navigate (without GPS) and usually be self-sufficient.
Suffolk being predominantly flat to find a fell race usually requires some travel!
A useful resource to find out information about fell racing and find events is the Fell Running Association website.
