Wibbly Wobbly Log Jog, Friday evening, July 11th: Eleven club members made the trip to High Lodge in Thetford Forest for one of the club’s long-standing, favourite summer races, run over a ~5-mile trail route through the forest. First Jogger home, and in great form, was Sarah Osborne (38:12, 12th of 288 overall, 1st F of 165, 1st FO), showing that she has regained all the speed she had before the birth of her baby a year or so ago. Other Joggers to finish were: Phil Blundell (47:07, 7th in M45), Reuben Smith (47:50, 12th in M40), Steve Oglesby (51:35, 9th in M45), Angela Drury (54:13, 7th in F45), Suzanne Bailey (58:51, 8th in F60), Jo Bouttell (1:00:43, 9th in F60), Sarah Kinston (1:02:35, 19th in F50), Anna Mayhew (1:03:23, 10th in F55), Lynda McCormack (1:06:54, 10th in F60) and Rob Pollard (1:19:03, ran with Nicola Pollard). The distance of the race is estimated at 5.2 miles from our members’ Strava readings.

On Sunday, near Mildenhall: Kirsty McDermott (~18:14,1st finisher overall) ran away with the Run Breckland 5K and continues in absolute top gear. Full results are not yet at hand. Her mother Alyson was also running in her first ever race and was proud to receive her medal.
Not far away, in the Zig Zag Suntime Runtime multi-lap event at Brandon Country Park, Suzanne Bailey (1:14:47, 10th of 25, 5th F of 14) took on the 2-lap 10.6km route (quarter marathon). She found it tough in the heat but finished well up in the placings.

New 2nd claim member Charlie Spencer (36:16, 138th of 13,079 overall, 2nd of 103 in M17-19) put in a massive performance in the Saucony London 10K on Sunday, despite the hot conditions. His future looks bright and we welcome him to the club. Out of interest, he was wearing Alphafly Invincible 3 shoes.

On Saturday, Chris Underwood ran in the Snowdonia Trail Marathon, in Gwyedd, Wales. The conditions were very warm but he was going comfortably enough. As he reached 19.7 miles, the race was discontinued and cancelled, due to many runners being badly affected by the heat. A sensible decision, no doubt.

Also on Saturday, Sianie Painter tackled the Race To The Stones 50K/100K trail race, which follows an ancient ridgeway from Lewknor in Oxfordshire to Avebury in Wiltshire. She originally entered the 100K but transferred to the 50K, when she realised the heat was becoming unbearable. She bravely continued to complete the 50K, despite being treated for heat stroke and requiring long recovery periods at the aid stations in the shade. Her total time, including stops, was 12:00:04, with 8:26:47 moving time. It was a great achievement under extreme conditions of heat, in direct sunshine.

Olivia Carter and Martin Smith both entered the Gosfield Standard Triathlon in Essex, which consisted of 1500m lake swim/40km road bike/10km run. Olivia (2:53:19 total time, 50:15 run) did very well to finish 41st of 81 overall and 5th F of 16. Martin Smith’s knee injury was playing up and he sensibly decided to finish with a 5km run/walk, rather than 10km, which enabled him to receive the Sprint Triathlon medal.
