Race Report
In 28 degrees of searing heat Paul Holley lined up with over one hundred competitors for the 4th running of the Stetchworth based Newmarket 10k. Taking the lead from the onset he convincingly managed to turn around the results of the recent Newmarket Heath Run by beating Saffron Strider Andrew Mynott by well over a minute; the win see’s yet another a fine performance from the elite Jogger who finished 0.03 seconds outside the course record and recently finished 16th in the Edinburgh Marathon. Third male home was Pawel Hundz. In the ladies race Debbie Cattermole 44:55 was first lady followed by Marion McCall 45:22 and Mary Narey 45:27 who ensured a thrilling finish by crossing the line only 5 seconds apart. First male team was Saffron Striders with first ladies team Stowmarket Striders.
Newmarket Joggers fielded a team of 11 for their club race and all put in superb performances on what is a notoriously testing course (who said Suffolk was flat?) and always seems to be run in tropical heat, great if you’re a supporter but you end up feeling grilled if competing. Following Paul’s fine lead was Nick Conway, who also ran his first marathon in Edinburgh, crossing the line in 17th position in a time of 42:24 and 2nd Jogger overall, next was David Cheese obviously refreshed from running the 5k on Thursday put in a great run to finish 44:38 with Martin Gear 46:03 just sneaking ahead of Ian Howell 46:37. Nat Allen was the first lady for the club putting in a strong uphill finish in 49:28 which saw her knock 3 minutes of her 2009 time followed by Guy Gibson 50:21. Taking a minute from last year’s time was Sue Stoten who crossed the line with fellow Jogger Sam Crockett in 55:20, Josh Lida was next in 58:15 again improving on last year’s time and Michele Healy putting in another good performance to round the team up in 64:22.
