In memory of Clive Purbrook

From 2024 the Stable and Stud Challenge has been renamed in memory of our dear friend Clive Purbrook.

Clive Purbrook tragically died on 8 May 2022. Clive had three loves of his life: running; horseracing and his family – possibly in that order!

He was a stalwart of the Newmarket Joggers and was the proud winner of the Newmarket Joggers Grand Prix in 2017. His last race for the Joggers was the Breckland 10K on 2nd May 2022, setting his best time for that year of 49:32 – not bad for a 66year old! He was a long time member of the Joggers and long serving committee member playing the invaluable role of the calm but challenging voice of reason; creating the momentum behind incorporation of the club to ensure its future. For many years he was the indisputable ‘king of the hill’ taking responsibility for route marshalling at the Heath Race every May.

Clive was a bit of a geek about horseracing, a walking Analogue’s Daughter, with a deep love of the thoroughbred and the sport. Who else would think that taking your girlfriend on a date at 5am on a cold windy and wet morning to watch training on the Newmarket gallops was the way to win her heart? Well it worked – and the love of the racing ensured that the Purbrook family moved here to be at the centre of the known universe.

So the Heath Race held a special place in Clive’s heart and it is a fitting tribute to Clive that we are naming the Stable Yard trophy in his honour.
