Encouraging results recently came through for the 4th fixture of the Arkwright/Turners Summer 5k League, held at Carver Barracks, near Saffron Walden on July 3rd. Newmarket Joggers moved back up to 4th of the 8 running clubs in the League, having slipped from 2nd position to 5th position during the first 3 fixtures at Histon & Impington (April), Ely (May) and Newmarket (June). The Joggers achieved a high total turnout of 52 club members (23 women and 29 men) with many of their fastest runners competing. Both the women’s team and the men’s team independently achieved 4th position in the League, with the combined women’s and men’s team also in 4th. Cambridge & Coleridge AC are currently League leaders from Ely Runners 2nd and Cambridge Tri Club 3rd.

Note: The first 5 women and first 5 men of each club scored points according to their finishing positions within gender, while the total number of female or male club runners was deducted from these points to give a final points total; the lower the points, the higher the team position. Thus, every runner contributed to the final score, whether by speed or participation.

On Saturday 6th July in Essex, Christopher Underwood and Jimmy Smith ran together and had fun in the navigational Ridley Round, over a trail course of ~14.8 miles. The route passed a number of old Ridley pubs along the way, with 10 minutes deducted off times for each pub visited. Before deductions, their joint elapsed time was 3:16:56; after 50 minutes deductions for 5 pubs visited, it improved to 2:26:56…well worth the bother. For the record, Chris and Jimmy finished =41st of 156 participants overall and =26th of 93 male runners, but nobody was counting. Paul Holley also started this run with Chris and Jimmy but unfortunately took a tumble early on and had to retire hurt. We wish him a speedy recovery.
