A good haul of trophies for Newmarket & Sudbury in Suffolk Winter XC League 2023-24

The full results are now out after the sixth and final XC fixture of the season at Framlingham Castle on March 3rd. They show that Newmarket & Sudbury (N&S; the joint team of Newmarket Joggers and Sudbury Joggers) achieved 3rd place trophy of 20 competing club teams for the men’s first team of 7, and for the combined men’s and women’s first team of 11 (7 men + 4 women). Furthermore, the men’s second team of 7 also achieved 3rd place trophy in their separate division, showing that there is depth in the line-up. N&S women’s first team of 4 were 9th of 20 in their division. At one stage of the season, N&S men’s first team held a narrow lead in their division but, in the end, Saint Edmund Pacers of Bury St Edmunds won 1st place trophy in every senior team competition, including women’s, men’s and combined, proving what a powerful cross-country force they are.

Looking at the individual age group competitions, the most success came to Newmarket Joggers Cerys Bithell (1st of 7 in FU17) and Robert Dobson NJ (1st of 11 in M40-44), who both won their competitions emphatically. They both finished first in their age groups in all four races they competed in, with at least 4 runs out of 6 needed to qualify. Next in line was Jimmy Smith NJ (2nd of 11 in M40-44) taking 2nd place trophy. He was a lynch pin for the first team and ran in every single fixture. Claiming 3rd place trophies were: Belinda Schofield NJ (3rd of 6 in F65-69), who also ran impressively in all the fixtures and defied age to make the women’s first team on every occasion; Joey Bendall (3rd of 28 in M Senior) who did very well in his first season against top class competition; Steve Edwards NJ (3rd of 24 in M55-59), who ran enthusiastically in all the fixtures; Greg Davis NJ (3rd of 14 in M60-64) who is bang in form this year and enjoying every run.

Also qualifying with at least 4 runs and putting in excellent efforts were: Nicole Smith NJ (7th of 14 in F50-54); Ruth Cowlin SJ (4th of 9 in F55-59); Helen Wass NJ (5th in F55-59); Liam Elvidge NJ (22nd in M Senior); Daniel Tee NJ (6th in M40-44); Marc Drury NJ (9th of 25 in M50-54); Tom Elton NJ (18th in M55-59); Rob Hawkins NJ (20th in M55-59); Brian Munns NJ (13th in M60-64); Steve Cousins NJ (4th of 7 in M65-69); Jim Withers NJ (6th in M65-69); Neville Clarke NJ (4th of 9 in M70+); Alan Thornhill NJ (8th in M70+); Chris Aylmer NJ (9th in M70+).

The SWL awards will be at 7:00 pm, 26th April at The White Hart in Newmarket, organised by Newmarket Joggers….plenty of silverware coming our way.
