Suffolk Winter XC League: Newmarket & Sudbury confirmed top of the table in men’s competition.

Exciting news: The official results are now through for the XC fixture at Haughley Park, Stowmarket on January 14th, showing that Newmarket Joggers & Sudbury Joggers (who join forces in this league to form team N&S) moved to the top of the table of 20 club teams in the men’s 1st team competition (first 7 men of each club to finish each fixture). Since then, as reported last week, there has been another fixture at Horseheath, near Haverhill, on January 21st, in which N&S men’s team did equally well, though official results are not yet out. So, there is every expectation that the top position can be maintained. It is believed to be the first time that N&S has topped this league in any of the men’s or women’s competitions. N&S men’s 1st team are currently leading on 5,349 points, with Saint Edmund Pacers (SEP) on 5,276 points and Saxmundham & Woodbridge on 5,232. In every other competition (including 2nd & 3rd teams and combined men’s and women’s teams), Saint Edmund Pacers are clear leaders. It will not be an easy task staying ahead of SEP in the final 3 fixtures, but it will be an exciting challenge.

The N&S women’s 1st team (first 4 women of N&S to finish) are currently holding their own in 12th position of 20 competing clubs, with the N&S combined men’s & women’s 1st team doing well in 2nd position on 6,874 points, though some way behind SEP on 7,252 points. Soon, we hope to have our fastest female runners fit and able to run, following some long term injury problems, though this may not take full effect until the 2024-2025 season. At Haughley Park, junior Jogger Cerys Bithell (16:16, 2nd F of 23, 1st of 5 in FU17) did very well in the 3.5km U17 race and currently tops her age group category in the League. She did very well again at Horseheath, though the official results are not yet out.

Barrow Zig Zag Windmill Way Wander, Saturday 27th January: Four Joggers took part in this event, mainly along quiet, country roads, through the villages of Barrow, Higham, Gazeley, Dalham and Denham. Anna Mayhew F50 (56:49, 17th of 56 overall, 9th F of 39) did very well in the 10K event, along with members of her Let’s Run Girls (LRG) group. In the Half Marathon, Marc Drury M50 (1:33:08, 6th of 102 overall) was first home, followed by Angela Drury F40 (1:59:14, 53rd, 5th F of 30) and Caroline Mcintosh F70+ (2:40:54, 93rd, 25th F). There were no age group category prizes for these races but, for comparison, usual age groups are shown for our club members.
