Mark Hayward tests himself in high class Telford 10K

Telford 10K, Shropshire, Sunday December 11th: In sub-zero temperatures and amid flurries of snow, Mark Hayward (34:11, 256th of 1,073 overall, 17th of 89 in M40) put in a huge effort to take 24 seconds off his previous 10K road race PB. This was no ordinary race. To illustrate just how high class the field was, no less than 33 of the entrants recorded sub 30 minute chip times, while top UK runner Samantha Harrison was first female finisher in 31:10. Mark did record 34:08 in his Ekiden 10K leg last August but that is regarded as a XC event on Power of 10/Runbritain, with less stringent course measurement. It does count on our club tables though.

Meanwhile, in equally cold conditions, Paul Holley (35:26, 5th of 718 overall, 1st of 38 in M55) was on top form in the Run Southampton 10K, coming away with another well-deserved age group trophy. His best time this year was 34:25 in the Martock 10K in Somerset last June.

On the same day, two Joggers travelled together and braved the bitter cold in the Milton Keynes Winter Half Marathon, in which a total of 1,322 runners took part. First home was Sarah Last (2:35:32, 458th F of 540, 47th in F50), followed by Gillian Green (3:01:50, 519th F, 15th in F60). Both runners have made big progress in stamina and distance races this year, with encouragement from each other.

Brandon Zig Zag 6H Multi Lap, Brandon Country Park, Sunday 11th December: Caroline Mcintosh was brave to tackle this hilly course in the freezing cold, with tree root hazards and icy snow on the ground. She completed 3 laps in 2:23:00, which came to exactly 10 miles on her watch.
