On Sunday afternoon 6th Jan there was a good turnout of Joggers for the Suffolk XC Championships at Culford School, Bury St Edmunds, where the standard of competition was extremely high. To illustrate just how high the standards were, the men’s 10K race was won by John Millar of Ipswich Harriers in a remarkable time (for an undulating, uneven, cross country course) of 31:51, with 4 more runners under 35 minutes. Similarly, in the women’s separate 10K race, the first 5 finishers all clocked under 40 minutes, with Emily Moyes of Aldershot first to finish in 38:24.
Undaunted, Neil Pollard (35:48) was first Jogger home in the men’s race and won 1st place trophy in the MV40 category, 8th of 165 runners overall, followed by Paul Dockerill (41:23) and Stuart Sowerby (42:54). Neville Clarke (46:12) came top in the MV65 category, over 7 minutes ahead of the next finisher. In the women’s 10K race, Emma Newman (47:41) was first Jogger home and 29th of 88 overall, followed by Danielle Jones (55:53) and Jan Holmes (59:24), Jan doing well to win 3rd place trophy in the FV55 category. Other Joggers to finish were: James Thomson (44:43), Neil Williamson (50:51), Clive Purbrook (51:12), Alan Shand (51:58), Baz Colley (58:05), Chris Aylmer (58:35), Jim Withers (59:27), Belinda Schofield (60:39) and Svitlana Zinchenko (65:55). Kate Warboys and Rebecca Fordham were kindly helping as marshals, with support from Hannah Pollard. Results available at http://www.stowmarketstriders.org.uk/sites/default/files/suffolk2019.pdf
Earlier on Sunday at 10:30am, 8 Joggers took part in the Thetford Trail 10K race at High Lodge in Thetford Forest. One Jogger, Neil Williamson, even ran in both races for a good 20K workout! First home for the Joggers was Adam Maltpress (43:15), 20th of 366 overall and 7th of 67 in his MV40 category, followed by Simon Cockerton (44:23), Andrew Taylor (45:18) and Neil Williamson (48:00). Jill O’Grady (54:59) was first female Jogger to finish, 18th of 87 in the FV35 category, from Sianie Painter (59:26), Alexia Smithson (61:23) and Carol McIntosh (68:14), with Carol winning 1st place trophy in her FV65 category.
The next Suffolk Winter League XC fixture is at Haughley Park, Stowmarket on Sun 20th Jan. Expect some rugged winter conditions…wind, snow, hail, sleet, mud, ice, puddles and slush. Only for the brave!
