The long awaited London Marathon took place on Sunday 22nd April. Most of the runners had completed the largest part of their months of training in the cold, wet and snow, so to be faced with 24 degrees on race day was a bit of a shock, and completely altered any race plans and expected finish times. 12 of the Newmarket Joggers joined the 43000 running in this iconic race and impressively made it to the finish line.
Chris Gay was first Newmarket jogger to cross the finish line in just 2.52.46. Neil Pollard was hot on his heals finishing in a superb 3.01.34. Robin Clifford was next, 3.07.54. Mark Hayward finished in 3.21.29. First time London Marathon runner Jon Brooker did an amazing run in 4.05.50. Giles Macrow (4.50.05) and Jackie Henley (5.20.38) also first time crossing the line at London did the club proud. Other club runners crossing the line at this unusually warm marathon were, Clare Fleming, Eleanor Margetts and Rob Jaina. Jeremy Reader sacrificed his own run to encourage his finance Emma Townsend over the finish line. Emma only gave birth to their first son 5 months ago so a fantastic achievement for her.
