Sunday was the final fixture in the 2010/2011 Suffolk County Cross Country League and Newmarket Joggers Ladies team were out to attempt to maintain their leadership at the top of the table after leading the league all season. Ursula White put in an outstanding performance to finish 6th lady overall and first Jogger home; Ursula has been the lynchpin of the team this season by competing in all 5 of the events and always finishing in the top 10. Another consistent and strong performer was next – Julia Midleton who was 15th lady overall and this fantastic effort saw her run away with the Ladies Vet60 title, Carolynn Anderson was 34th and final team member Karen Harned really proved the star of the show by changing her plans for a family day out and running instead which saw her pick up 22 valuable points and finish 40th lady. The effort of all the women who have competed in the league has been fantastic as everyone has ran their hearts out turning out in mud, wind and freezing conditions to support the club, those that couldn’t’ make it on Sunday but have helped guarantee success by running in the other fixtures were Jo Gapp, Sue Stoten, Philippa O’Brien, Claudine Butler and Diana Thomas without their dedication to the team this glory would not have been possible.
However the silverware did not stop there as combined with the men’s team Newmarket Joggers finished 3rd in the league (out of 14 teams) and making up the men’s team on Sunday was Vincent Coogan (6th) Greg Davis (19th) Brian Munns (28th) Steve Edwards (33rd) Neville Clarke (52nd) Jason Beeton (71st) Jim Withers (75th). The men have also been a very dedicated squad throughout the winter and Jason Beeton is by far the most improved performer as he has ran in all 5 fixtures and his performance has gone from finishing 135th overall at the start of the season to 71st overall on the final fixture, an amazing achievement in 5 months. Steve Edwards and Vincent Coogan have also competed in all 5 events which is a massive undertaking and much appreciated by all at the club.
The Juniors were also running and Michael Bartrum continues to excel in these events with Sunday being another example, he finished 3rd overall and finishes the season 2nd Boy U15 which is a fantastic result in a very competitive age category. Peter Elsdon-Dean is the only Junior to compete in all 5 events and he is another Jogger who has improved throughout the season, he finished 38th overall on Sunday and now looks forward to starting the Junior 5k League which starts in May. Charlotte Jones was the only Junior girl out and put in a good performance over the sandy and muddy terrain to finish 43rd.
There is an awards ceremony on Friday 11th March which will see the Joggers out in force to pick up the silverware as winners of the Ladies League, Ladies V60, Senior Men’s & Ladies Combined 3rd and 2nd in Boys U13, who needs the Oscars when you run for the Joggers?
