Bungay XC Race Report

Bungay was the penultimate fixture for the Newmarket Joggers in this year’s Suffolk County XC League and had the fixture been closer there would perhaps have been less on the start due to last minute abstainers as it was declared just before the gun that the course was a new design of 3 laps and 6miles in distance (normally the cross country’s are circa 5 miles).  The course was a true cross country with dips and dug outs to negotiate along with bog and branches so the moans and groans at the start were not unwarranted.

It’s been a tremendous season so far for the Joggers with dedication and determination shown throughout which has seen the Newmarket Joggers ladies team as league leaders since October 2010, the men’s are in 4th (out of 14 teams) and combined the Men’s and Ladies are looking at 3rd place overall.   The ladies were full of enthusiasm to try and ensure their leadership remained intact and with strong performances from Jo Gapp, who was first lady home for the club, and Ursula White, this was guaranteed as both women finished in the top ten, in addition Julia Midleton maintains her 1st Lady vet 60 position with Carolynn Anderson completing the quartet which is now 27  points clear at the top of the table – something many football managers would love to say at this time of year!

The men were again in incredible form all finishing in the top 100 with two top ten places recorded, first home was Paul Holley in 4th despite requiring first aid at the finish and Vincent Coogan ran another strong race to gain 8th position. Next home was Greg Davis who like Paul is training for a Spring Marathon and finished in 19th position.  Neville Clarke (66th), Jim Withers (68th) and Jason Beeton (96).

The Juniors were male dominated and both in the Boys Under 13 age group with Ryan Holley (son of Paul) finishing in 29th position and Peter Eldson-Dean putting in a flying sprint finish over the 2mile course to complete in 33rd overall, this was a great weekend for Peter who had also been competing on Saturday at Lee Valley and recorded 3 personal bests in Long Jump, 300m Hurdles and 600m.
