The Cross Country League fixtures were affected by the bitter weather conditions in December which resulted in an extended break in the League, however this did not deter the Newmarket Joggers ladies team from turning out in force to try and maintain their leadership of the league at Haughley Park on Sunday.
First home for the Ladies was Joanna Gapp who completed the 2 lap course, famous for its logs, ditches and pond negotiating in 60th place overall and 5th female, the ever determined Ursula White was next for the ladies putting in a great effort, despite recent flu, to finish 9th lady overall.
Julia Midleton was next for the team finishing strongly to gain 1st Lady v60 and closely followed by Diana Thomas who made a welcome return to the squad.
The triumphant efforts of the ladies resulted in them maintaining the winning team league position 10 points clear of Stowmarket Striders.
The men’s team also sent out a strong crew with 3 finishing in the top 20 – Paul Holley (3), Vincent Coogan (13) and Greg Davis (17). Brian Munns, Steve Edwards and Jim Withers as ever put in strong performances gaining valuable points for the team & welcomed new recruit Noel Benn to the Cross Country ranks with Jason Beeton and Stuart Janes ensuring a great team performance to see the men finish 4th team overall on the day.
The Juniors were also proudly wearing the blue, white and black vests with Paul Holley’s son Ryan joining the team for the first time lining up with 86 other athletes to complete one lap of the Senior course.
First home in a fantastic finish was Michael Bartrum who was 4th overall and only 13 seconds behind the winner, next over the line was Ryan Holley closely followed by Charlotte Jones and Peter Elsdon-Dean. Superb performances by all the Juniors over a very technical course.
